Why Your Dog Licks Their Paws (And What It Means)
If you’ve ever noticed your dog constantly licking their paws, you’re not alone. Paw licking is one of the most common behaviours dog owners notice, and while occasional licking is normal, excessive licking can be a sign something is bothering your dog.
When I first noticed my own dogs doing this, it usually happened after walks or at night when they were relaxing. That’s when I started paying closer attention to what might be causing it.
Common Reasons Dogs Lick Their Paws
Environmental Allergies
Dogs can collect allergens like grass, pollen, and dust on their paws when they walk outside. When they come inside, they naturally lick their paws to clean them, which can sometimes make the irritation worse.
A simple habit that helped with my dogs was wiping their paws after walks.
Food Sensitivities
Certain ingredients in a dog’s diet may contribute to itchy skin or paw irritation. Many pet owners find improvement when switching to simpler, natural foods and treats.
Dry Skin
Dry or irritated skin on the paws can cause dogs to lick them repeatedly. Supporting skin health through nutrition and hydration can help maintain healthy skin.
Boredom or Stress
Dogs sometimes lick their paws simply because they are bored or under-stimulated.
Providing enrichment activities such as slow feeders or puzzle feeding can help redirect this behaviour.
At The Pawfect Trio, we’re big believers in enrichment because mental stimulation plays a huge role in a dog’s wellbeing.
